【妖怪説明】
ウシオニ・ギュウキ・ゴキともいう。近畿、中国、四国・九州に伝わる。
特に高知県土佐郡土佐市村（元・高知市）には牛鬼淵という場所があり、伝説が伝わっている。
あるとき淵の魚をたくさん捕まえようと村の長者が毒を流すことを考えた。淵の主の牛鬼は美女に化けて夢にでて止めようとしたが、長者は聞き入れなかった。淵に流した時、例の美女が現れていずこかへ去っていった。その後とった魚でうたげをしていたところ山崩れに巻き込まれ全滅したという。
他にも和歌山では会うだけで病に倒れたり、人の影をなめて喰い殺す、などが伝わっている。

The legend was transmitted mainly to western Japan. It is also reported in Kochi Prefecture. In the past, rich people in the village tried to get fish in the swamp. USHIONI became beautiful women. The rich disregarded his attention. A beautiful woman appeared and went somewhere when they caught the fish. After that, everyone ate fish, but they caught up in landslides.
