【妖怪説明】
静岡県吉田町能満寺に伝わる。

平安時代中期に陰陽師の安倍晴明が諸国歴訪の旅にでて、この地の地図を作成するため能満寺の西側に一年余り住んだ。ある日、大井川を流れてきた大蛇をみつけたので葬り、その上にソテツを植えた。するとソテツは蛇の精をうけ大きくなり蛇の姿になったので、晴明は害を与えないよう精を封じた。

また、徳川家康が駿府城にいた頃の話もある。
家康が能満寺へ立ち寄った際に大ソテツに感心し譲りうけ城にうえることになった。大勢の手によって住吉の浜まで運び清水港へ陸揚げし駿府城へ移した。
２、3日たったある夜、家康は物音で目を覚ますと庭で悲しく泣くような声がする。連夜きこえるため評判となったため見張りをするとソテツのあたりで「いのー、いのー」と訴えるように泣いているようである。
学者を呼び話すと「いのう、とは行こう、行きたいということで、家へ帰りたい」ということだという。これを聞いた家康はソテツを能満寺へかえし、それからは泣くことはなかったという。

「駿府の庭ではいのーが募る ふるさと思いて夜毎泣く」

【The large cycad at Nomanji Temple】
It is handed down at Nomanji Temple in Yoshida-cho, Shizuoka Prefecture.
In the mid-Heian period, Abe no Seimei, an onmyoji (magician of the Chinese sect), traveled around the country and lived on the west side of Nomanji Temple for over a year to map the area. One day, he found a giant snake floating down the Oi River, so he buried it and planted a cycad on top of it. The cycad then became possessed by the snake's spirit and grew large, taking on the form of a snake, so Seimei sealed the spirit away so it would not cause any harm.
There is also a story from when Tokugawa Ieyasu was staying at Sunpu Castle.
When Ieyasu stopped by Nomanji Temple, he was impressed by the giant cycad and bought it to place in his castle. A large group of people carried it to Sumiyoshi Beach, unloaded it at Shimizu Port, and moved it to Sunpu Castle.
One night, two or three days later, Ieyasu was woken by a noise and heard what sounded like sad crying in the garden. The sound could be heard every night and became a cause for concern, so when someone kept watch, they heard it crying near the cycad, crying out "Inou, Inou."
When a scholar was called, he was told that the cycad was saying, "Inou means to go, to want to go, and that it wanted to go home." Upon hearing this, Ieyasu returned the cycad to Nomanji Temple, and it is said that it never cried again after that.
