【妖怪説明】
白沢とも。
中国の霊獣で人語を話し王の徳が高い時に現れるという。黄帝が東海に至った際に出会い、世の中の害を除いたと言われる。
また中国に11520種の妖怪がいると教え、それを画家に命じて描かせたものが「白沢図」であるが現存しない。
日本では獏と混同されていたようで、邪気を払う縁起のよいものとしてお守りにもされていた。おおむね顔に３つ両脇の腹にそれぞれ３つの目があり、計９つの目をもつ姿で描かれる。
東京目黒区・五百羅漢寺の獏王像も本来は白沢像である。
「九の眼が見染めるなれば 三千世界に邪気はなし」
