【妖怪説明】
神代文字の“ヲシテ”で書かれた『ホツマツタヱ』で言われる八岐大蛇。
女神ハヤコの化身、もしくはそれら勢力の頭目を象徴するものとされる。

モチコとハヤコの姉妹はアマテルの妃となるが、子が後継に選ばれなかった。
ハヤコはアマテルの弟のソサノヲに恋慕し、モチコとともに後継を殺害しようとするが失敗し九州の宇佐への蟄居が命じられる。
ところが姉妹は宇佐を出奔し出雲で一派と合流してヤマタカシラノオロチとしてソサノヲの婚約者を次々に殺害した。ソサノヲはオロチを征伐し、ハヤコは祀られヤマスミの姫(岩長姫)に転生、モチコの怨念はコカシラノオロチ(九頭大蛇)に転生し蝦夷に潜むが陸奥で討たれたという。

【Yamatakashira-no-orochi】
The Yamata no Orochi mentioned in the Hotsuma Tsutae, written in the ancient Japanese characters "Oshite."
It is said to be an incarnation of the goddess Hayako, or to symbolize the leader of these forces.

The sisters Mochiko and Hayako became Amateru's wives, but their children were not chosen as successors.
Hayako fell in love with Amateru's younger brother Sosanoo, and together with Mochiko, they tried to assassinate the successor, but failed and were ordered to live in seclusion in Usa in Kyushu.
However, the sisters fled Usa and joined forces with a group in Izumo, where they killed Sosanoo's fiances one by one as Yamatakatashira no Orochi. Sosanoo defeated Orochi, Hayako was enshrined and reincarnated as Princess Yamasumi (Iwanagahime), and Mochiko's grudge was reincarnated as Kokashira-no-Orochi (the nine-headed serpent) and hid in Emishi but was defeated in Mutsu.
