【妖怪説明】
岐阜県の伝説。
もっとも古い記述は『日本書紀』の「仁徳天皇六五年丁丑」のもの。
飛騨国に宿儺という、一つの胴体に二つの顔を持ちそれが背中合わせになっている者がいた。
頭は一緒だがそれぞれに手足があり、膝はあるがひかがみ(膕：ひざのうしろがわ)と踵がない。
力が強く素早く、左右に剣を佩いて４本の手に弓を並べて持っていた。
朝廷の命令に反き、人民から略奪していたため、和迩氏の祖である武振熊が誅した。
『飛騨の伝説と民話』には高山市の千光寺にある両面宿儺象をとりあげた話がある。
宿儺は身の丈６尺、顔が二つに手足が４本で力が強く４、５０人を一度に相手取ることができた。手下を従え出羽ヶ平の岩窟にすみ、夜になると人里で略奪を繰り返していた。
みかねた役人が仁徳天皇に宿儺退治の申し立てをし、武振熊が征伐に向かった。宿儺は美濃の高沢山に陣取ったが蹴散らされ、最後は岩窟で捕らえられ斬首された。
宿儺は盗賊などとして語られるが、両面宿儺像を祀る千光寺では仏法に帰依して開山した人物として信仰されており周辺でも英雄として扱う伝承が多い。
